Wrong pixel ID or measurement ID installed

A tracking tag can load perfectly and still be useless: when the ID doesn't belong to your account. A foreign or old account collects your data, and your ad account stays empty. It happens more easily than you'd think, especially after switching agencies.

How you notice

  • Meta Pixel Helper finds a pixel, but no events arrive in Events Manager.
  • GA4 stays empty although the Google tag loads on the page.
  • Campaigns suddenly have no conversions without any visible change on the website.

Common causes

Copied from a template

Code from another project or an agency template was reused, old ID included.

Test and live account mixed up

A test property or test pixel was installed during setup and never replaced.

Wrong variable in Tag Manager

In Google Tag Manager the ID sits in a variable that points to another account.

How to check it yourself

  1. 01Read the installed ID: for Meta with Meta Pixel Helper, for Google with Tag Assistant (tagassistant.google.com, Add domain, enter your address, Connect).
  2. 02Compare it with the ID in your account: in Meta the pixel ID is shown for your data source in Events Manager, in GA4 the measurement ID (starting with G-) is under Admin in the data streams.
  3. 03Also check in Events Manager with Test events whether your page views arrive there.

How to fix it

  • Replace the wrong ID with the right one, ideally in one central place (a Tag Manager variable or the shop integration).
  • Remove old pixels and properties that are no longer used.
  • Keep a note of which IDs belong to which website. It saves time at the next agency switch.

Let it be checked automatically

On every check Trackneat reads the IDs of all tracking tags. If you enter your expected IDs, Trackneat reports every mismatch.

The free check shows you in about a minute which tracking tags run on your website and whether anything fires before cookie consent. No account needed.
